A selection of this week’s more interesting vulnerability disclosures and cyber security news. Another week and lots more breaches including a new high (or low depending on how you look at it). While many such breaches continue to make the news for the scale of people affected, its the little ones that tend to be ignored which could in fact be a greater problem. Such as this one:
Larger data breaches provide a trove of information for identity theft and fraud on a global basis, much of it ending up as an random fraudulent payment on a bank statement which is dealt with, new cards issued and life moves on. It is these smaller and local breaches that should be more of a concern. In this case as well as many other similar ones personal details and more are lost in a community where those details could have a direct relationship between the finder and those individuals exposed. That has potential for greater impact on those lives.
Of course people make mistakes, lapses of memory or attention lead to accidental exposure. However when moving either physical or electronic data around outside a safe environment consideration of what you have in your hand and the potential disaster if lost and how to reduce the risk should never be far from mind.
